League final National T20 report

The first silverware of the season came to Brook Lane on Sunday with Ormskirk beating Colwyn Bay in an action packed Area Final of the National T20 Knockout Cup.

It all started in the morning when the first semi final was played against arch rivals Bootle. Having won the toss OCC batted and reached a total of 169 in their 20 overs.

Michael Jones (47) and Andy Baybutt (87*) were the top scorers with Andy in outstanding form getting his runs off 58 balls to include nine 4s and one 6.

In reply Bootle did not get the good start that Andy and Michael had secured for Ormskirk. With all the bowlers performing well the middle and later order batsmen, with the exception of Neil Williams (41), fared no better and they were dismissed for 109, sixty runs short of the target. The victory left Ormskirk looking forward to the Final against Colwyn Bay or Maghull, to be played in the afternoon

In the event, Colwyn Bay were too strong for Maghull and the stage was set for the Final between Ormskirk and Colwyn Bay to be played in the evening in front of a very big crowd bathed in glorious sunshine

Colwyn Bay won the toss and elected to bat. The first wicket fell without a score on the board when Scott Lees bowled opening batsman Campion. From then on it was an uphill struggle to contain the batsmen and they piled on the runs. At the end of the 20 overs they had scored 167 runs which overall included ten 6s and fifteen 4s.

The story about the reply is all about Andy Baybutt. He carried on from where he had left off in the game against Bootle by peppering the boundary, but this time with more regularity and more power. In just forty nine balls he scored 89* to include twelve 4s and two 6s. Thanks mainly to him the winning score was reached with five overs to spare.

In presenting the Trophy to skipper Matt Glayzer, the President of the Liverpool Competition Eric Hadley paid tribute to how wonderfully well OCC had hosted the Finals Day.

Once the formalities were over and the trophy secured in Matt’s hands the celebrations began.
